Bakuchiol is a meroterpene phenol abundant in the seeds and leaves of Psoralea Corylifolia. It is the plant-derived, functional analogue of Retinol. Studies show that Bakuchiol upregulates Types I and IV collagen and stimulates Type III collagen as well as Fibronectin protein levels in mature fibroblast model. It also inhibits hyaluronidase, the enzyme that breaks down Hyaluronic Acid, and elastase, the enzyme that breaks down elastin, both of which are vital components of the extracellular matrix.
Compared to Retinol, Bakuchiol has a remarkably strong antioxidation activity. Tests showed Bakuchiol also exhibits wound-healing and skin-regenerating activity faster than Retinol. Bakuchiol has been hailed for its multidirectional efficacy against cellular hallmarks of skin aging.
